Deceased Name: MARY RIGG BERGER STEINMAN

Mary Rigg Berger Steinman of Van Nuys, Calif., (Los Angeles), formerly of Superior, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, of pancreatic cancer.

Born in New York City onApril 8, 1924, she spent her early childhood in Chicago and moved to Superior when she was 12. Mary graduated from Central High School in Superior and attended the University of Chicago before returning here and being actively involved in many endeavors. Mary was secretary of Superior's Community Concerts Association for many years. She was president of Superior's Library Board and became a past worthy matron of the Order Of Eastern Star there. She served as President of Zonta International in Duluth.

Mary moved to the Los Angeles area in 1978 to be near her only child, Aimee Berger Anderson.

Artistic and creative, Mary involved herself in diverse arenas of life. She had many careers, and never really retired from working. During the past five years she had her own Mary Bond Originals Co., designing custom decorations and gifts, including jewelry and gift baskets. At the time of her death, Mary was an officer in her LEADS Club. She also was approaching her 10th year as president of her Colonies Condominium Association, having garnered much appreciation for her considerable leadership through the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and subsequent major repairs of all 110 units damaged. Mary belonged to Chapter FN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Van Nuys, Calif. Mary loved beautiful things, classical music, art, flowers, travel and the theater. Precious to her was her Lynx-point Siamese cat, Murphy. Mary treasured beauty and found unique beauty through her own creative mind. She provided beauty and kindness for the many who will miss her.

The abrupt loss of this vibrant, talented woman is keenly felt by Mary's daughter, Aimee Jo Berger Anderson, in Los Angeles. She is also mourned by nieces Elaine (David) Aronsohn of the Minneapolis area, Jean Rigg of the New York City area, and Virginia (Jim) McLaren of West Columbia, S.C.; a nephew, William B. Rigg, of Melbourne, Fla.; and sisters-in-law on her late brothers' and late husband's sides.

MARY WILL BE BURIED beside her beloved late husband, Morris, whose loss was always with her. Interment 12:30 p.m. Monday in Temple Emanuel Cemetery, Duluth. Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555, is in charge of arrangements.
