Deceased Name: MARY RIGG BERGER STEINMAN Mary Rigg Berger Steinman of Van Nuys, Calif., (Los
Angeles), formerly of Superior, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, of pancreatic
cancer. Born in New York City onApril 8, 1924, she spent her early
childhood in Chicago and moved to Superior when she was 12. Mary graduated
from Central High School in Superior and attended the University of Chicago
before returning here and being actively involved in many endeavors. Mary was
secretary of Superior's Community Concerts Association for many years. She
was president of Superior's Library Board and became a past worthy matron of
the Order Of Eastern Star there. She served as President of Zonta International
in Duluth. Mary moved to the Los Angeles area in 1978 to be near her
only child, Aimee Berger Anderson. Artistic and creative, Mary involved herself in diverse
arenas of life. She had many careers, and never really retired from working.
During the past five years she had her own Mary Bond Originals Co., designing
custom decorations and gifts, including jewelry and gift baskets. At the time
of her death, Mary was an officer in her LEADS Club. She also was approaching
her 10th year as president of her Colonies Condominium Association, having
garnered much appreciation for her considerable leadership through the 1994
Northridge Earthquake and subsequent major repairs of all 110 units damaged.
Mary belonged to Chapter FN of the P.E.O. Sisterhood in Van Nuys, Calif. Mary
loved beautiful things, classical music, art, flowers, travel and the
theater. Precious to her was her Lynx-point Siamese cat, Murphy. Mary
treasured beauty and found unique beauty through her own creative mind. She
provided beauty and kindness for the many who will miss her. The abrupt loss of this vibrant, talented woman is keenly
felt by Mary's daughter, Aimee Jo Berger Anderson, in Los Angeles. She is
also mourned by nieces Elaine (David) Aronsohn of the Minneapolis area, Jean
Rigg of the New York City area, and Virginia (Jim) McLaren of West Columbia,
S.C.; a nephew, William B. Rigg, of Melbourne, Fla.; and sisters-in-law on
her late brothers' and late husband's sides. MARY WILL BE BURIED beside her beloved late husband,
Morris, whose loss was always with her. Interment 12:30 p.m. Monday in Temple
Emanuel Cemetery, Duluth. Dougherty Funeral Home, 727-3555, is in charge of
arrangements. Memorial donations may be directed to pancreatic cancer
research, in care of the American Cancer Society, California Division, 4840
